Cylindrical Dandruff and Eyelash Crusting: What They Mean and How to Clear Them

Waking up with crusty, stuck-together lashes, or noticing flaky debris at the base of your eyelashes, is one of the most common — and most annoying — signs of eyelid disease. The type of crusting tells you a lot about what's going on. Here's how to read the signs and clear them gently.

The three kinds of lash-line debris

• Hard, brittle crusts (collarettes): classic of bacterial (staphylococcal) blepharitis. They can wrap the lash like a tiny collar and may leave the lid margin sore.
• Greasy, soft flakes: typical of seborrhoeic blepharitis, related to the same process behind dandruff and oily skin.
• Cylindrical dandruff: a clear, waxy cuff that slides up the lash from the base. This is the signature sign of Demodex mites living in the lash follicles.

Why it keeps coming back

These crusts aren't just cosmetic — they're a sign of an active, self-sustaining cycle. Bacteria, mites and altered oils irritate the lid margin; the irritation changes the lid environment; and that changed environment encourages more build-up. Wiping the crusts away in the morning doesn't address the cause, so they return the next night. Breaking the cycle means treating the lid margin consistently, not just clearing the surface.

What the research shows about castor oil

This is where the New Zealand blepharitis trial is directly relevant. Over four weeks of twice-daily castor oil application to one eye, treated eyes showed:

• Reduced cylindrical dandruff (the Demodex sign),
• Reduced eyelash matting,
• Greater decreases in both staphylococcal and seborrhoeic crusting than the untreated eye.

In other words, a single, simple oil reduced all the main crusting types — which makes sense given that most people have a mixture. A complementary 2025 University of Auckland study found castor oil shortened Demodex mite survival, supporting its role specifically against cylindrical dandruff.

A gentle routine to clear crusting

• Warm compress (5–10 minutes). Heat softens hardened crusts and the oil in blocked glands, making everything easier to clear. A controlled heated eye mask is more effective than a flannel that cools quickly.
• Gentle lid hygiene. Wipe along the lash line to remove loosened debris — don't scrub hard.
• Apply castor oil. A thin layer of 100% cold-pressed castor oil along the upper and lower lid margins, twice daily, conditions the skin and helps keep the lash line clean. Applying it at night lets it work while you sleep — useful against Demodex.
