How omega-3 works on dry eye
This is not a lubricant and it does not add moisture. The fatty acids you eat are incorporated into the oil your meibomian glands secrete, and the evidence suggests they change how readily that oil flows and how inflamed the surrounding tissue becomes.
That has a practical consequence worth stating plainly: it is slow. You are altering the raw material of a gland’s output, not applying something to the surface. Our guide to how long omega-3 takes to work covers the expected timeline, and the full nutrition guide covers the mechanism.
What to look for in a fish oil
Four specifications determine whether a supplement is comparable to those used in research: the combined EPA and DHA dose, the ratio between them, the chemical form, and freshness. Capsule count and total fish oil weight tell you very little on their own.
Triglyceride-form oils are generally better absorbed than ethyl ester, and freshness matters because oxidised fish oil is both unpleasant and less useful. We have written a full guide to choosing a fish oil supplement if you are comparing this against something else.
Who it is for
People with evaporative dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction, particularly those committing to a maintained routine rather than looking for immediate relief. It works best alongside heat and lid hygiene rather than instead of them.
It is also relevant if your overall diet is weighted toward omega-6, which is common and which our guide to the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio covers.

Common questions
How long before omega-3 makes a difference?
Three months is the realistic expectation. Omega-3 works by changing the composition of the oil your meibomian glands secrete, which is a slow mechanism by nature. Trials showing benefit generally run three months or longer, and supplementation abandoned at three weeks was always going to appear ineffective.
What dose should I take?
Follow the label for this product. Dose in dry eye research is usually expressed as combined EPA and DHA rather than total fish oil, which is why comparing products on capsule count alone is misleading.
Why does the EPA to DHA ratio matter?
The two fatty acids behave differently. EPA is the more anti-inflammatory of the pair, while DHA is more structural. Most dry eye research has used EPA-weighted formulations, though the evidence is not settled.
Can I take it with other medication?
Speak to your doctor if you take anticoagulants or are due for surgery, as fish oil can affect bleeding time. This is the main interaction worth checking.
Is it safe if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Omega-3 is commonly recommended in pregnancy, but check with your midwife or doctor before starting any supplement, and confirm the product is suitable.
