Omega-3 & Eye Nutrition
Key overview
- Omega-3 works by changing the composition of the oil your meibomian glands secrete, not by adding moisture.
- That makes it slow by mechanism. Trials showing benefit generally run three months or longer.
- Dose, the EPA to DHA ratio, chemical form and freshness vary enormously between products and are not always clear from the label.
- If you take anticoagulants or are due for surgery, discuss fish oil with your doctor first.
Omega-3 works on dry eye through the composition of the oil your meibomian glands produce. The fatty acids you eat are incorporated into that secretion, and the evidence suggests they change how readily it flows and how inflamed the surrounding tissue becomes. This is a slow mechanism by nature: you are changing the raw material of a gland's output, not applying something to the surface.
That has a practical consequence worth stating plainly. Supplementation that is abandoned after three weeks because nothing has changed was always going to produce that result. Trials that show benefit generally run for three months or more.
The other thing that matters is what is actually in the capsule. Dose, the ratio between the two active fatty acids, the chemical form, and freshness all vary enormously between products, and the label is not always straightforward to read.
