A Simple Nightly Eyelid Routine with Castor Oil for Healthier, More Comfortable Eyes

The most effective eye care is the kind you'll actually keep doing. A short, calming eyelid routine at night is easy to stick to — and bedtime is a particularly smart time to use castor oil, since it can work on your lids for hours while you sleep. Here's a simple routine built around the clinical evidence.

Why nighttime works so well

During the day, blinking, screens, wind and air conditioning all stress your eyes. At night, your eyes rest — so a lid treatment applied before bed has uninterrupted hours to condition the lid margin. This is especially relevant for Demodex, where the 2025 University of Auckland study supported overnight castor oil application as a way to reduce mite survival.

Your 5-minute nightly routine

  1. Remove make-up and wash your hands (1 min). Start with a clean face and clean hands — eye make-up left on overnight feeds blepharitis.
  2. Warm compress (2–3 mins). Place a heated eye mask over closed eyes to soften crusts and the oil in your meibomian glands. This primes the lids so the next steps work better.
  3. Gently clean the lash line (30 secs). Wipe away loosened debris along the lashes with a soft cloth or lid wipe — gently, no scrubbing.
  4. Apply castor oil (30 secs). With eyes closed, roll or dab a thin layer of 100% cold-pressed castor oil along the upper and lower lid margins. Keep it external — a little may migrate to the lashes, which is fine.
  5. Settle in. Let it work overnight. In the morning, your lids often feel less crusty and more comfortable.

Add the daytime and internal pieces

The nightly routine is the anchor, but two additions make it more effective:

  • A morning castor oil application. The clinical trial used twice-daily application. If you can, add a quick morning repeat (allow it to settle before contact lenses or make-up).
  • Daily omega-3. Taken with food, omega-3 improves the quality of the oil your glands produce over about 12 weeks, supporting the tear film from the inside.

What to expect

Be patient and consistent. In the research, meaningful improvement in lid signs and symptoms appeared at the four-week mark. You may notice less morning crusting and more comfort sooner, but the real payoff comes from making this a nightly habit. Because blepharitis and dry eye are chronic, keep going even once your eyes feel better — stopping tends to let symptoms return.

Quick safety reminders

  • Use 100% cold-pressed, pharmaceutical-grade castor oil — external use only.
  • Don't instil oil directly into the eye.
  • Remove contact lenses before applying.
  • See your optometrist for persistent pain, marked redness, lash loss or vision changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave castor oil on my eyelids overnight?

Yes — a thin layer of pure cold-pressed castor oil on the outer lid margins is designed to be left on overnight, and research supports overnight use against Demodex mites. Keep it external and avoid the eye itself.

Do I need to do this every night?

For chronic blepharitis and dry eye, a consistent nightly routine (ideally with a morning application too) gives the best results, since the conditions return if treatment stops.

Publishing notes

Each post targets a distinct keyword and search intent to avoid keyword cannibalisation. When publishing in Shopify: paste the post body, then set the SEO title and meta description from the dashed box, use the suggested slug, and add the FAQ questions as an FAQ section (they're written to be eligible for FAQ rich results if you add FAQ schema). Internal links point to your product and dry-eye pages — update any URLs if your slugs differ. Consider adding one relevant image per post with descriptive alt text (e.g. "applying cold-pressed castor oil to the eyelid margin") for extra SEO value.
