Why Overnight Castor Oil May Be Best for Demodex Mites

Timing matters more than you might think when it comes to treating eyelash mites. There's a neat piece of biological logic behind applying castor oil at night — and it's backed by how the 2025 University of Auckland research played out. Here's why bedtime is the sweet spot for Demodex.

Reason 1: Demodex are night owls

Demodex mites are most active in the dark. During the day they burrow down into the follicles; at night they emerge, move across the lid margin and mate. Applying a treatment at bedtime means it's present on the lash line exactly when the mites are out and most exposed to it.

Reason 2: Castor oil needs hours, not minutes

The 2025 ex vivo study found that castor oil shortened Demodex survival to a median of roughly four hours (about 235 minutes for 100% castor oil, and around 325 minutes for the manuka/kanuka blend). That's effective — but it's a slow burn compared with tea tree oil's few minutes. A treatment that acts over several hours is perfectly suited to being left on overnight, where it has an uninterrupted window to work. Unlike stronger anti-mite agents that sting, pure cold-pressed castor oil is well tolerated, so it can safely stay in place for hours while you sleep. Harsh treatments have to be rinsed; gentle ones can keep working.

How to do an overnight application

1. Remove eye make-up and wash your hands.

2. Optionally use a warm eye mask first to soften crusts and gland oil.

3. With eyes gently closed, roll or dab a thin layer of 100% cold-pressed castor oil along the upper and lower lash lines.

4. Keep it external — don't drop oil into the eye. A little migration onto the lashes is fine.

5. Leave it on overnight and cleanse gently in the morning.

Consistency is key

Because mites reproduce continuously and new ones mature over a roughly two-to-three-week life cycle, a single night won't solve the problem. Nightly application over weeks — ideally as an ongoing habit — is what keeps the population suppressed. Think maintenance, not one-off treatment.
