What Are Eyelash Mites? Meet Demodex, the Tiny Creatures Living on Your Lashes

It sounds like the stuff of nightmares: microscopic mites living in your eyelashes, right now, on almost everyone. But before you panic — this is completely normal, and usually harmless. Here's the calm, factual explanation of what eyelash mites actually are.

Meet Demodex

Eyelash mites are called Demodex. They're microscopic, eight-legged relatives of spiders and ticks, far too small to see with the naked eye (about 0.3–0.4 mm long). Two species live on humans: Demodex folliculorum, which lives in hair follicles including your eyelashes, and Demodex brevis, which lives deeper in the oil glands. They've been with humans for our entire evolutionary history.

Almost everyone has them

Studies suggest Demodex are present on the majority of adults, and the likelihood of carrying them increases with age — by older adulthood, carriage is nearly universal. So having eyelash mites doesn't mean you're unclean or unusual. It's a normal part of the human skin ecosystem.

What do they do all day?

Demodex feed on skin cells and the oils (sebum) around the follicle, and they're most active at night, moving between follicles in the dark. In small numbers they may even be harmless or neutral. The problems only start when their population grows too large.

When mites become a problem

An overgrowth of Demodex around the lashes can trigger irritation, itching (especially in the morning), redness, and the tell-tale cylindrical dandruff at the lash base. At that point it's called Demodex blepharitis. Overgrowth is more likely with age, rosacea, oily skin, and reduced local immunity.

What helps keep them in check

Since you can't (and needn't) eliminate them entirely, the aim is to keep numbers reasonable so they don't cause symptoms. Gentle lid hygiene, tea tree-based products, and — supported by recent research — castor oil can all play a role. A 2025 University of Auckland ex vivo study found castor oil shortened the survival of Demodex mites taken from eyelashes, backing its use as a gentle, overnight measure.
