Do Blue Light Glasses Help Dry Eyes?

Blue light filtering lenses are marketed heavily for screen use, and they are one of the few areas in eye care where the evidence has been examined carefully and come back fairly clearly. It is worth knowing what that evidence says before spending money on them.
What the research found
A Cochrane systematic review published in 2023 examined randomised trials of blue light filtering spectacle lenses. Cochrane reviews are the most rigorous form of evidence synthesis available, and this one concluded that blue light filtering lenses probably make no difference to visual fatigue with computer use in the short term, and that there was no reliable evidence of benefit for eye health.
That is an unusually clear finding for a consumer product category. It does not mean the lenses are harmful, and it does not mean nobody has ever felt better wearing them. It means the benefit is not attributable to the blue light filtering.
Why they were never going to help dryness
Even setting the evidence aside, there is a mechanical reason to be sceptical about blue light glasses specifically for dry eye. Dryness at a screen is caused by evaporation from a surface that is exposed too long and resurfaced too rarely — a consequence of reduced and incomplete blinking, dry air and lid position. The wavelength of the light arriving at the eye plays no part in that chain.
Filtering some of that light may change how comfortable a display feels to look at, particularly at night. It does not change how often you blink or how fast your tear film evaporates.
If they seem to help you
Several explanations are more plausible than the filter:
- You needed glasses anyway. Many blue light products are sold with a low-power prescription or as ready-made readers, and correcting even a small uncorrected error reduces strain substantially.
- The anti-reflective coating. A good coating reduces reflections and glare, which genuinely helps comfort and is unrelated to blue light.
- The glasses themselves. A lens in front of the eye slightly reduces air movement across the surface, which is a real if modest effect — the same reason wraparound glasses help some people outdoors.
- Behaviour. Putting glasses on to work is a ritual that makes people more conscious of taking breaks.
None of these is a reason to stop wearing something you find comfortable. They are reasons not to expect blue light filtering to resolve dryness.
What to spend the money on instead
If screen-related dryness is the problem, the interventions with a mechanism behind them are: lowering the monitor, dealing with airflow and humidity, deliberate complete blinking, and treating the oil layer with heat if the glands are already struggling. None of those is as easy to buy as a pair of glasses, which is much of why the glasses sell.
