If your eyes are fine on Saturday and uncomfortable by eleven on Monday, the building is a reasonable suspect. Conditioned air is one of the most common environmental contributors to dry eye, and it is rarely something the individual has much control over — which makes the small changes that are available worth knowing.

The mechanism

Three things happen in a conditioned space.

Humidity falls. Cooling air causes it to lose moisture, and heating it lowers relative humidity further. Many offices sit well below the range at which people are comfortable. The drier the air, the steeper the gradient pulling water out of your tear film, and the faster it evaporates between blinks.

Air moves constantly. Even gentle sustained airflow across the eye accelerates evaporation considerably compared with still air. Most people have no idea where the air in their workspace is coming from until they go looking.

Air is recirculated. The same air passes repeatedly through the space, accumulating dust and particulates that add a low-level irritant load to an already compromised surface.

Layer a screen on top — with its reduced, incomplete blinking — and the combination is efficient at producing evaporative dry eye in people who have no symptoms anywhere else.

What you can actually change

  • Find the vent. Stand at your desk and work out where the air is coming from. Overhead diffusers can often be redirected, and many are adjustable by hand. This is usually the highest-value change available to an individual.
  • Move if you can. A desk two metres out of the airstream can be a different experience entirely.
  • A desk humidifier. Effective within its immediate vicinity. It will not alter the humidity of an open-plan floor, and expecting it to leads to disappointment.
  • Lower your monitor. Reducing exposed eye surface reduces how much of it the dry air can act on.
  • Deliberate blinking. More important in dry air than in humid air, because each blink has less time before the film breaks.
  • Drink water. Worth doing, though systemic hydration has a far weaker effect on tear film than the local air does. Do not expect it to solve the problem alone.

Raising it at work

Building humidity is a facilities matter, and in many jurisdictions there is guidance on acceptable ranges for occupied workplaces. If several people on a floor are affected, it is a legitimate thing to raise together, and it carries more weight as a group observation than as an individual complaint.

When the environment is not the whole story

Environmental dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction frequently coexist, and dry air makes an existing gland problem symptomatic much earlier. If your symptoms no longer fully clear at weekends, or if they persist through a holiday, the tear film itself is likely involved and is worth treating directly rather than continuing to negotiate with the air conditioning.
