Gaming and Dry Eyes

Gaming concentrates every risk factor for screen-related dry eye and removes most of the natural interruptions. It is not a different condition from office dry eye — it is the same mechanism with the volume turned up.
Why it is harder on the eyes than work
Blink rate falls with attentional demand, and few things demand attention as continuously as a game that requires reaction. Where office work involves looking away to think, answering someone, or reading from paper, competitive play in particular can involve very long stretches with the eyes locked on a display.
The second factor is duration. A working day is fragmented by meetings, conversations and walking to get coffee, all of which reset the eyes without anyone planning it. A four-hour session has none of that structure unless you impose it.
The third is timing. Late sessions coincide with the part of the day when the tear film is already less stable and when fatigue reduces blink completeness further.
What is not the problem
A few things get blamed that do not deserve it. Refresh rate and frame rate do not affect tear film. Blue light emitted by the display is not a meaningful contributor to dryness, as covered separately. A dark room does not dry the eye, though the contrast between a bright display and a dark surround can contribute to the fatigue that makes everything feel worse.
What these do have in common is that they support longer, more comfortable-feeling sessions, which is indirectly the problem.
What helps
- Build breaks into the game, not into willpower. Between matches, between rounds, at save points, on death screens. A break tied to something that already happens survives; a break that requires you to notice the time does not.
- Deliberate full blinks at every break. Several complete closures where the lids properly meet. This is the specific thing hours of play has not been doing.
- Lower the monitor. Gaming setups skew high, often with the display raised for posture reasons. Dropping it narrows the exposed eye surface.
- Find the airflow. PC exhaust fans, a desk fan, and heat pump vents are all commonly aimed at the face in a gaming setup without anyone having chosen that.
- Cap the session. The uncomfortable advice, and the effective one. Symptoms that appear at hour three are telling you something about hour three.
Drops, and their limits
Preservative-free lubricating drops are reasonable for symptomatic relief during a long session. They do not treat anything — they replace what has evaporated for a period measured in minutes. Frequent reliance on drops is a signal that the underlying tear film needs attention, not that you need more drops.
When it persists after you stop
Dryness that clears within an hour of finishing is environmental and behavioural. Dryness that is present when you wake up, or that persists through days without gaming, suggests the oil layer is involved and is worth treating directly.
